Strangeloop has joined Radware

The i’s and t’s have all their requisite dots and crosses, and today I’m extremely excited to announce that Strangeloop has been acquired by Radware.

This is a really great day — not just for Strangeloop, but for our customers and for acceleration technology in general.

It’s great for Strangeloop because we get to integrate our awesome team with the equally awesome folks at Radware. We get the best of both worlds — the ability to continue to push forward with the same aggressive start-up mentality we’ve had ever since we founded the company in 2006, coupled with the ability to bring our solutions to a greater audience, thanks to Radware’s huge market reach and global reputation. It’s every tech company’s dream scenario.

It’s great for our customers and partners because it makes their lives simpler in an increasingly complicated world. Our customers have always asked us to help them find ways to limit complexity. By bundling our products with Radware’s complementary application delivery and security solutions, companies can now enjoy unparalleled, highly secure, end-to-end acceleration in one package.

It’s great for FEO technology in general because we can continue to innovate — developing new treatments and furthering our performance knowledge, and then sharing that knowledge with you, the members of our community.

You can read this post on the Strangeloop blog to find out what this move means, in practical terms, for our customers and partners, but the short answer is that it’s business as usual here at Strangeloop. I have a new Radware title — VP Application Acceleration — but other than that, things will go on pretty much as usual. I’ll continue to explore and evangelize performance through my blog and podcast, and I hope you’ll continue to join us on our exciting journey.

Introducing the Web Performance Today podcast

I’m very excited to announce the launch of a project that’s been in the idea phase for more than a year, and actively in the works for the past couple of months: the Web Performance Today weekly podcast. (Note the link to the podcast index at the top of this site.)

I’m a huge podcast fan. I’m a regular listener of This American Life, Planet Money, A Prairie Home Companion, Rich Eisen, Dot Net Rocks, and Wiretap, to name just a few. There’s an immediacy and energy to podcasts that you don’t get from a blog post. Last year, I started thinking how cool it would be if we could take the kinds of fascinating conversations that happen in the hallways at Velocity and put them out there for everyone in our community to hear.

So this fall, spearheaded by Marie Clavel, Strangeloop’s heroic VP of Marketing, we rounded up some recording gear, lined up interviews with some of the biggest movers and shakers in our industry at Velocity EU, and kickstarted this baby.

Today, it seems only fitting that we launch the series with interviews with Patrick Meenan and Stephen Thair.

Without Pat, our industry would be a very different place. As you probably already know, he was one of the key people behind the development of WebPagetest, one of the first synthetic performance testing tools. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I describe WebPagetest as revolutionary. It opened a lot of people’s eyes to the fact that real-world performance in no way reflects the ivory tower experience that most of us have while sitting in our cushy data centers, and it was instrumental in helping create a necessary sense of urgency in our community.

Stephen Thair is working hard to create this sense of urgency in the UK and Europe, which have historically lagged behind North America when it comes to performance. In addition to running his own performance consulting business, Seriti Consulting, Stephen also heads up the Web Performance Meetup Group in London, sat as a member of the Velocity program committee, and organized the inaugural London WebPerfDays unconference that followed Velocity EU this year.

I know a lot about the performance space, but it was gratifying to sit down with Pat and Stephen and realize there’s always more to learn. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with both of these smart, interesting, funny guys.

We’re teaming up with Amazon Web Services to bring advanced FEO to CloudFront customers

There’s a great quote from Geoffrey Smalling, CTO at Wine.com, in this Strangeloop case study:

Anyone who tells you there is [a single magic bullet] does not have a deep understanding of the myriad issues that affect performance. Performance tuning requires a multi-tiered approach.

To get the best acceleration results, most of our customers use a combination of front-end optimization (FEO), content delivery network (CDN), application delivery controller (ADC), and in-house engineering. But this many acronyms can come with a steep price tag. While this is a great approach if your company has deep pockets or the in-house know-how to structure these solutions, let me paraphrase an old ad: “For everyone else, there’s Amazon CloudFront and Strangeloop.”

This is my roundabout way of announcing our latest partnership, this time with Amazon Web Services. Effective immediately, we’re teaming up to offer Strangeloop’s Site Optimizer service to CloudFront customers.

CDN + FEO: Two great tastes (etc.)

The benefits of combining content delivery with FEO aren’t news if you’ve been reading my blog for a while. To sum it up, CloudFront addresses the performance middle mile by bringing resources closer to users — shortening server round trips and, as a result, making pages load faster. Strangeloop’s technology tackles performance at the front end, analyzing and optimizing every page of a site, without touching code, so that it renders more efficiently in the browser.

As the table below (which uses data from this case study) shows, this combined solution has a huge impact on page metrics, from number of requests to payload to start render and load times. The bottom line: a combined CDN/FEO solution can make pages up to four times faster.

Q: Who wins? A: Small- to mid-sized companies

As a pay-as-you-go service, CloudFront brings an affordable content delivery service to smaller companies. In the same way, we can now bring advanced FEO — which has formerly only been available to companies with those aforementioned deep pockets — to smaller companies, as well as to companies for whom FEO is murky new territory.

Amazon Web Services senior manager Alex Dunlap has written a really great post on the AWS blog that talks about our partnership and explains how to configure Amazon CloudFront to work with Site Optimizer. Which Browsers are the Fastest?

An interesting companion read to the Lifehacker piece, New Relic’s “Speed Wars” study shows that, while IE 9 speeds past other browsers on Windows, Chrome 13 on Mac was overall the fastest experience. In mobile speed tests, the fastest experience was delivered by Blackberry Opera Mini at 2.6 seconds, twice as fast as Safari 5.1 on iPad.

I wrote a piece for GigaOM showing that the average page size is now over 1MB, according to the HTTP Archive. At current growth rates, the average page could hit 2MB by 2015, which is a really big deal, especially for mobile users.

End-to-end optimization: Taking content delivery to the next level

The content delivery ecosystem is changing, and with the launch of our latest product — the Strangeloop Network Accelerator — we here at Strangeloop are excited to be playing a part in this.

In this post, I’m going to provide some historical background that takes us up to the present market readiness for end-to-end optimization (EEO). Then I’ll share a bit of how Network Accelerator works.

A brief history of time saving: From delivery to transformation to delivery PLUS transformation

History of time saving: Infrastructure to delivery to transformation

As I’ve talked about many times, organizations that recognize the need to take their website’s performance to the next level need to change their basic assumption about acceleration. This change is not a 180-degree turn, however – it’s an evolutionary change. Delivery-based solutions, such as content delivery networks and dynamic site acceleration (DSA) tools, have formed a solid foundation. And in recent years, transformation-based solutions — specifically front-end optimization (FEO) products and services like the ones we develop at Strangeloop — have complemented this foundation.

If you’ve spent any time in this space, you know that these solutions, while complementary, have been available as more-or-less standalone options. But it was only a matter of time before someone found a way to consolidate DSA and FEO solutions, and then leverage CDN infrastructure to deliver these solutions closer to end users — all in one cost-effective package.

We’re happy that it was us.

What this means for telcos and cloud providers

Telcos and cloud providers are aggressively entering the content delivery space. Here’s the elevator recap as to why:

Pages are getting bigger. Web traffic has been growing almost exponentially. More data traveled over the web in 2010 than in the entire preceding history of the internet. Telcos have been paying to provide the highways for all this traffic — highways that traditional CDNs are leveraging for their own purposes, at a considerable profit.

Telcos have a vested interest in entering in this space. Traditional CDNs don’t necessarily create the most efficient pathways for content, and these inefficient pathways are expensive — specifically, they’re expensive for telcos. By moving content around more efficiently, and by caching content in their own PoPs close to end users, telcos stand to save a lot of money.

But saving money is just part of the equation. In recent years, providers have realized that they are in a strategic position to add value to customer content by offering:

  • quality of service across the entire delivery ecosystem,
  • economies of scale that confer cost advantages for content owners, and
  • even faster content delivery than traditional CDNs, because they are closer to end users.

Ultimately, the big winners will be end users. Telcos and cloud providers are very aware of the growing end user demand for availability and quality of service — the user experience stats we cite all the time. They want to leverage how they manage their networks and their cloud so that they can  offer their customers — and by extension all web users — better, faster, higher quality content.

They’re constantly building out their infrastructure, increasing their PoP density (aka “capillarity”, a term I love, picked up from Gonzalo de la Vega from Telefónica at the recent Content Delivery Summit), and shortening the journey from PoP to end user.

This is one part of the next-gen content delivery equation. Network acceleration solutions like ours are the next part.

So how does the Strangeloop Network Accelerator work?

We offer the first acceleration package that tackles the entire content delivery chain, piggybacked on network infrastructure. We call it end-to-end optimization (EEO), and it looks something like this:

Strangeloop Network Accelerator1. It starts with Near-Client Edge Acceleration powered by our proprietary LightSpeed platform — acceleration nodes that sit at or near network PoPs.

At the edge, Network Accelerator receives connections and starts up browser rendering as fast as possible using the LightSpeed platform. The LightSpeed platform extends business logic to the edge, allowing adaptive acceleration decisions to be made in real time — without demanding greater infrastructure spend or complexity.

2. Then comes Middle-Mile Acceleration powered by our innovative DSA technology.

Network Accelerator uses our own next-gen version of DSA to optimize middle-mile delivery. Our unique visibility into content patterns allows Network Accelerator to perform content-level optimizations such as aggressive compression, HTML differencing, and symmetric acceleration techniques to reduce traffic to its leanest and most efficient form — typically accelerating content by at least five times.

3. And finally Near-Server Edge Acceleration, powered by our award-winning FEO platform.

Network Accelerator takes our best-of-breed FEO engine and enables it to power an infinitely scalable and redundant cloud platform. By adding advanced FEO at the PoP, rather than at the origin server, we can do extremely cool things such as facilitate adaptive and real-time information sharing between nodes and on-demand rewriting that scale in real time to changes in load.

Of course, it’s not enough to have infrastructure and a faster content delivery network.

It would be naive to think otherwise. Telcos and cloud providers need to evolve in other areas in order to successfully disrupt the CDN market:

  • They need to learn to sell high-value products.
